Cannabis Explained: Everything You Need to Know

Cannabis

Cannabis is a plant that is commonly used for recreational and medicinal purposes. This plant contains over 80 different, naturally-occurring compounds that are known as “cannabinoids.” Plant variations, or cultivars, are grown to produce varying concentrations of cannabinoids, typically CBD or THC.

Cannabis-Derived Compounds

Cannabis-derived compounds are naturally occurring compounds found in the cannabis plant. Examples of these compounds are CBD and THC. Cannabis-derived compounds are often used to manufacture drug products, such as highly purified CBD that is extracted from the cannabis plant.

Cannabis-Related Compounds

Cannabis-related compounds are synthetic compounds that are created in a laboratory. These compounds are also used to create drug products, similar to cannabis-derived compounds. Some of these synthetic compounds naturally occur in the cannabis plant, and some do not.
The sponsor will obtain a pre-Investigational New Drug (pre-IND) number through the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) review division in order to request a pre-IND meeting. This pre-IND meeting is optional. However, it is a great opportunity to get Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidance on sponsor research plans and required content for the sponsor’s IND submission. For new animal drug research, a sponsor may need to contact the Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) to establish an Investigational New Animal Drug (INAD) file.
